Finding Courage
by Gay Williford

A dusting of fresh snow
coated the front door path.
In this path a large man’s footprints
led up to the door. His hesitation
there was obvious as the steps
shuffled, turned and walked away.
Ellie knew her uncle came to apologize,
but hadn’t yet found the courage
to discuss his culpability.
She hoped for another opportunity
to share that she had forgiven him–
holding a grudge was senseless.
She also knew unforeseen circumstances
played a big part in the accidental death.
Who knew the swing chain was worn thin?
Ever mourning her small son–s passing,
she still desired to help this man
move forward, even as he fought
to forgive himself.
