Kiss Me, it’s Christmas!
by Gay Williford

A favorite tree ornament–
a snowman couple standing
under mistletoe offering kisses
at a fair booth – sporting the invitation
to come “Kiss Me … it’s Christmas!”
Years ago Mom and Dad offered such comfort,
however unreal, with a request to “kiss away”
any kind of pain by applying this sweet sensation
as a special, magical healing balm.
In today’s world, beleaguered by war, lies,
greedy dictators and terrorism, I approach
the holidays with mixed emotions,
seeking a non-material cure-all,
wishing some miracle would spread
over the world and begin to repair the woes
that have so maimed and warped us.
In this season of giving, please indulge me
this small gesture – press your lips to my cheek,
assure me things will get better,
convey a bit of hope I can carry to tomorrow,
and I will be forever grateful! Do come,
kiss me, it’s Christmas, and kiss me once again!
