Upon Waking
by Becca Yenser

Waiting for that pink
to grow, to develop
an answer thick to page,

Here a secret is grown
in those thin rings
of mother's milk.

Pain knocks blindly in the night,
one exhale to the next,
our bodies speaking in code.

I should have known
you'd find your way,
it only takes one month

To grow another song
now I spend the hours
counting backwards,

while you plough through your day,
hands deep in bags,
eyes ever upward.

Tell me the world has not changed.
Tell me this is love and that is all.
