Metamorphosis on Her Terrain
by Paulette Demers Turco
The aftermath of Mom’s bad ankle twist
brought Dad into the kitchen over twelve
long weeks, a room Mom coveted throughout
their fifty wedded years, her claimed terrain.
Relinquishing her power, with her ankle
raised above the level of her heart,
her balance off in body, sense, and mood,
a little brusque–not so rare for her–
her spouse exuded calm. As she’d prefer,
Dad mastered breakfast first–essential food
to start the day: fresh coffee, toast or tart,
and fresh-squeezed orange juice. How he could rankle
her with his mistakes, and yet retain
his smile–noon sandwiches, no greens about,
a side of chips would do. By four, he’d delve
into the freezer, most days. Mom would insist:
no change, until she tried his stuffies. Pride
showed through as she ate two. Dad loved his bride.
