To the Phoenix Tree
by Bing Hua
Tr. Liu Mei

If I love you
I will first turn my feathers green
Merging with your vibrant sheen
Becoming a part of your radiant scene

If I love you
I will first become the queen of birds so true
When all the flocks toward me flew
I’ll guide them to rest on you
I will proclaim to every bird, sky, and tree
That you’re not just the king of phoenix trees to me
You are my sovereign, my destiny

My phoenix sovereign, proud and serene
Only the phoenix, noble and keen
Is worthy to be your bride, your queen
