Rain
by Janet Leister

I returned
from the sun
which dried me out
back to the fog
back to the rain
where the meteorological
metaphor of my life
defines me

this homecoming
renders me ambiguous
glad for the omnipresent green
but regret for everything I lost,
the friends who abandoned me
just when I needed them

but in spite of it all
you stayed beside me
you loved me
and told me I had worth

we left behind the farmers
the petty and provincial
the dry yellow valley
we left them behind for the rain
but it doesn't matter

we are snug in bed
clinging together
listening to the rain on the roof
