The Potting Shed
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
after the oil painting "Sweet Pea" by Carmen Drake Gordon

Shadows deep and grey
Terracotta flower pot
Shelter from the cold

What's a mouse to do
Winter's wind is wild and harsh
Not to mention rain

Or the thought of snow
It saturated my old home
No place left to go

I'm hungry and tired
Sweet peas are my favourite meal
Cosmos for dessert

I slipped through a crack
took refuge inside this shed
made a little bed

to keep myself warm
I supped on sunflower seeds
drifted off to sleep

I love my new home
It's the one I know I'll keep
Sweet dreams of Springtime
