Anticipating Winter
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
In summer chopping wood,
One must have a mind of winter.
There I stood, axe in hand,
Wondering how many logs I'd need
If indeed the solstice
Turned the ground to ice
And our little house held a deathly chill
With snow upon our window sill.
As I flog the wood,
Causing it to split and splinter,
In summer chopping wood,
One must have a mind of winter.
