Daybreak
Is never late enough
I try to swim back
to a watery dream
of lips
and hands
and pelvis

bathing suit
wading
in a Newark gutter
after summer rain
Father carries
me upstairs
slips off
my soggy suit
pats me dry
and powders
o so gently
my chafed
thighs
