Love Note
by Michael Escoubas
(with an opening line from a song by Dolly Parton)

I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there.
I’ve known countless moments like this one.
You are my shelter in the cool morning air.

The day we met, I drew near on a dare.
Since then, you’ve been as steady as the sun.
I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there.

The news about children was hard to bear.
You held my hand; you knew we weren’t done.
You were my shelter in the cool morning air.

We struggled thinking that life isn’t fair.
We were in a battle that had to be won.
I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there.

You assured me I could count on your care.
You were light on a hill; we always had fun.
You were my shelter in the cool morning air.

We proved the doctors wrong; they were in error.
Now we have grandchildren: eleven in sum.
They wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there.
You are my shelter in life’s cool morning air.
