Lighthouse, by Sharmagne Leland-St.John

Rolling to Starboard
by Joel Savishinsky

Life has been telescoped
from the wrong end,
its tall towers and grand statements
shrinking in recession as
you sail away across the waters,
pushed from portside by a strong tide,
watching ambitions grow small
as the distance grows big.

Soon, there are no landmarks
or lightmarks to navigate by,
yet the voyage itself feels
all too familiar, regardless of
whether you view it with
spyglass, eyeglass or I-glass.

When you pull away from a lover, a child or
a friend, leaving touch and words in your wake,
all the moons in a year won’t matter,
or how much topsail you can raise:
you are still adrift with your dreams
amid the speed and splash of the sea.
Rolling to starboard yields just
a moment’s sweet thrill, and though
the boat rights itself in a swell or two,
it will never bring you home
if you stay on this course.
