Lighthouse, by Sharmagne Leland-St.John
While Contemplating Aegean Green
by Vaughn Neeld
Upon the shore of the Aegean Sea
green water washes against
ancient red bricks of a port city
where the rising obelisk of a silent
lighthouse eyes the horizon.
Does its nighttime glow still search
for the sailors of long-gone Byzantium?
or ships flying from the destruction of Ilium?
Do the beautiful green waves
glide gently over the graves
of illustrious heroes lying lonely
upon the silt of millennia?
Is this rocky shore where on a moonless night
fleeing triremes wrecked upon a rocky shore?
Today the scene is serene–
hardly a wave on the deep
except for the wake of a boat
tearing savagely through the green
of the plankton-rich cove.
In the distance, the windows of the lighthouse
stare starkly out to sea.
