Round Up, by David Edward Kucera
Cowboys
by Michael Escoubas
We think of cowboys
as in days long past and yet
if we look hard enough
through the artist’s brush
we see this one riding rough
on his quarter horse
leaning into the bridle’s
turn, we hear the groan
of his well-oiled saddle
as horses and cattle
obey the cowboy’s “Hey,”
“Get along there.” He knows
his stock by name, they know
him. This man is not a relic;
he’s still out there today–
just beyond the snow-stacked
mountain, lean and mean,
wearing chaps and spurs,
boot heels dug into stirrups–
face sun-weathered, heart
happy in a world of leather,
hide, and sky, spirit soaring
above his cloud-mottled heaven.
