Round Up, by David Edward Kucera

A Last Bucket List Wish
by Elayne Clift

A seasoned traveler,
She’d dreamed of it for years,
But had not managed it yet,
Time fleeing as she imagined
The secluded mountain dude ranch,
Where she could ride with the cowboys,
Share meals, tell tales, and laugh with them.

She’d seen the ads, big ranches,
Small ones too in remote places,
With wide landscapes and golden grasslands,
Where horses and men communed with each other,
Beneath majestic mountain colors at sunset,
And tall grass whispered to each other,
At roundup time.

She wouldn’t have minded riding solo,
With one guide who was handsome and trustworthy.
That seemed like Heaven. When would it happen?
Would it happen, she wondered, but it never did.
She’d waited too long.
But a girl can dream, can’t she?
Even that might have been enough.
