Round Up, by David Edward Kucera
New Lives
by Howard Osborne
Across the wide open fields with a mountain view
A round up of wild horses, yet are prone to rebel
The time is right when that opportunity presents
Leaving such a valuable resource makes no sense
To be content at the ranch, one could almost tell
Then fed and cared for, a working life that’s new
In months of training, their wildness will be gone
And yet memories of freedom might well persist
But with a role and a valued function to perform
Together and individually, discipline is the norm
Despite some echoes of freedom when they resist
Yet for future riders, it’s something to think upon
Up until now, there were no saddles, bits, or reins
Yet punishment is never any good form of control
Encouragement is still a strange yet welcome thing
And those occasional modest rewards it will bring
A gallop will ever reside waiting in an equine soul
But there will be memories when out on the plains
