Her Month
by Gay Williford

July bursts open
with cherry bomb suddenness.
Opportunities arrive
to achieve and shine
with Roman Candle flare.
Sweltering into the summer Equinox,
water lures, enticing people to shores
for cool ocean breezes.

Patriotic colors reign
in parade, picnic and band concert
as the nation honors
its proud beginnings.
July hosts outdoor living,
ballgames, camp outs,
treehouse adventures
and adds one more candle
to her already well-lit cake.
This hot summer month
tastes of Rocky Road ice cream,
hamburgers, hotdogs,
iced teas and fizzy sodas.

Its voices are evening cicadas,
ice cubes tinkling in glasses
and the rhythmical burst
of sky-bound fireworks.
Splashing across night’s pallet
they explode and expand,
filling the darkness
with spark and boom!
