Round Up, by David Edward Kucera
Reining them In
by Gay Williford
Four young mustangs pant and snort
as they rest from racing across the grassy plains.
Max, a ranch hand, and his horse, Kebo,
have finally caught up with them.
Kebo reverses his steps
in an abrupt pivot to assist Max
who will corral the four
back to the ranch for branding.
The wild ones’ precious freedom,
their right to run with the wind, whenever–
is a thing of the past as now they
must submit to man’s will.
Even the gray-blue majestic Teton
rising up so mightily in the background
cannot alter their future.
