Silence Rebuffed
by Scott Shaffer
(with homage to Paul J. Pastor’s “Below the Glen”)

Let the silence get inside you.
She’s on a subterranean mission
to shine her torch in childhood caverns–

where imagination once roamed,
frolicking with intuition and spirit–
now decorated with cobwebs.

Silence yearns to dance with the still, small voice,
who whispers truths and co-creates with us.
She can help you renovate those creative caves.

She offers, “Let’s amble together,
alone with your thoughts …
and the Creator who knows them all.”

But you seem to prefer racing with the noise,
activities, achievements, the urgent; keeping
your own counsel; drowning out deeper things.

Silence bows to your will; sad that you spurn
her offer. Won’t you reconsider?
Let the silence get inside you?
