A Child's Long Summer Day
by Vaughn Neeld

The day crept by slowly
full of potential for a child of ten
who would get up early eager to begin,
to finish chores,
to run down the hill,
to splash in the creek,
to build castles of sand,
to chase minnows,
to pick wild plums, spit out the seeds,
to climb up cottonwoods,
to do chin-ups on limbs of trees,
to burst into the house,
to drink water from a tin,
to grab a bite then rush out again,
to go pet the cows,
to wade in the pond,
to lie in the grass,
to dream under the clouds,
to feed ants to the horned toads,
to tell ladybugs to go home,
to ride to the library,
to read in the shade.
There was so much to do
As the day crept by slowly
on a long summer day.
