Day Dream, Summer
by Priscilla Turner Spada
The scene, an expansive summer sky and sea,
unwinds and stretches out until we see
an intermingling–where does one begin,
the other end?–water and air akin,
as their milky hues paint the horizon.
A single sail, stark white, glides by, floats on
the blue, as if composed by an artist's hand.
Gulls rise on updrafts, bank and call, then land,
peck and search among the broken shells.
Shimmering in the sun, a gold-skinned girl
shapes a castle wall as waves unfurl,
streaming round the ramparts. Its moat, dug deep,
soon slips away …
a dream not hers to keep.
