ABOUT THE BOOK:

Jim Wilkerson dives into the world of everything winter. What are the sounds, sights, smells? What emotions manifest during this season? He reaches into his own experiences but also tries to look at the life of others to examine what winter means to all of us. You will read poems about the beauty of winter. You'll witness love. You will also get hit with suffering, anger, and depression. Winter, like every season of life is just that - life, and that is what this book is about.

ADVANCE PRAISE:

Winter Poems is a truly wonderful collection of seasonal poems. Get ready for a trip down memory lane of your childhood winter days, and poignant grown-up experiences. Grab a hot cocoa or hot toddy and find yourself here: “But all I hear or feel / is the cold, crude wind / Wisping through the brittle branches / falls upon fresh / tree stumps / and I jump / at the chance / to dream.” Weaving into his poems, Jim has also included how his faith has kept him warm in these dark days of winter. So get that fire in the fireplace going, curl up and enjoy this book that pays homage to winter.
–Mary Beth Bretzlauf, President, Illinois State Poetry Society.

What a delightful collection of winter poems! In these lyrical poems Jim Wilkerson takes us on a journey through the winter season. It moves from a farewell to Autumn to a day of sledding with the kids through new snow. We are sometimes threatened by blizzards but mostly touched by snow angels throughout these reveries. A favorite is the snow horse instead of snow man, built alongside a creative Mother. I also enjoy the haiku interludes spaced between the lyrical narrative poems. Get a copy of Winter Poems so you too, like the puppy, realize you don’t need to be told how to play in the snow.
–Dr. Randy Brooks, Professor Emeritus of English, Millikin University

FROM THE BOOK:

Where Only You Can See

by Jim Wilkerson

In this endless
white landscape
I see a hint
of red swirls
soaring in the heavens
teasing bands
of warmth
stretching
closer

You’ve been here
beside me
through the
long dark night
holding me steady
against winds
that wish to whip
and wipe away

You watched me quiver
at demon shrieks
that echoed from
valleys and shadows
of death

I know the cold
can’t last
and these old burdens
that once cut deep
like rusted barbed wire
will soon fall down
and shatter

We will walk together
leaving footprints
in the melting snow
over the mountains
where only You can see
