When an Old Man Dies
by Martin J. Postma

When fog of memory forms deep in the eyes
And weight in the heart brings many to cry;
When binds of friendship are like family ties,
There’s sorrow within when an old man dies.

Then we think back to his earlier days,
Ambitions of youth and those curious ways;
His character built through many a challenge,
Respect he has earned from effort and balance.

Adventures out yonder brought many a twist,
Highlights of a life, lived ever so swift,
Formed within him, a wit sharp and clever
We shall hear again, sadly not ever.

In context of time, a trail he has left
With ever so many friendships long kept;
Memories of hours spent talking together
Are of our lives, a genuine treasure.

His days are now past, let’s not be forlorn;
The community out of which he was torn
Will better become, in years far ahead
Because of the way the old man has led.

Now time is at hand to wish him farewell
And fondly think back on stories we’ll tell;
A life nicely lived, without a regret
And of the old man, may we never forget.
