Gold Star Kid
          of Charles Noel Douglas Turner, Navy corpsman
by Priscilla Turner Spada

"He was a hero," I would say–
he died just after my birth day–
when kids would ask of his demise.
With other sailors and GIs,
he'd gone to war oceans away.

Armed with meds, he'd make his way
to foxholes where the wounded lay;
bandages were his supplies.
He was a hero.

He wore a red cross, in harm's way
with bombs and strafing night and day.
These men, we're proud that they saved lives,
but left behind, their babies, wives–
and bravery medals for display
… he was a hero.
