Rheinstein Windmill House Overlooking Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY ~Ben Kasazkow

Haunting House
by Gay Williford

The dark landscape emits a solemn aura.
Dunes, covered with waving amber grasses,
fill the plains that carpet this barren sea coast,
while overhead grey skies
lend shade to wind-blown, bent trees.
These paint the background to
a sprawling, wood and stone house
that seems sure to covet secrets.

A windmill tower rises up in its center–
offering many sea-viewing windows,
yet this mysterious structure stands
gloomy, cold and unlived in.
Sea winds whine, shadows move about
and unexplained noises disturb.

A perfect setting for the Crow murders
in which, years ago, two gang brothers were hanged.
Today, a pall still reigns as though
a mourning spell were tightly cast here
and is prevailing across the years.
