Spring Awakening
by Elayne Clift

It began with the fragrant green of early May,
When windows were open to inhale its scent,
As one day rolled gently into the next,
And daffodils, crocuses, and forsythias,
Burst into bloom before magnolia and crab apple trees,
Fought for first place in the garden’s beauty.
Then hungry squirrels attempted bird feeder climbs,
Falling off gracefully and moving on.
Next came the potpourri of plants with pastel colors,
Waiting for regal roses, and annuals to appear,
Sprouting around them in perennial plots,
Ready for their seasonal debut parties.
Then the bees came,
with muffled sounds
as they flitted in a frenzy,
To explore the feasts before them.
There were the big black bees,
That feel frightening,
But it’s the small yellow jackets,
That find their way to picnic tables,
Prolific and proud to be back in town,
They make no sound, but tell us that,
Without a doubt, Spring has arrived.
