Rheinstein Windmill House Overlooking Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY ~Ben Kasazkow
Windmill House on Sandpiper Hill
by Paulette Demers Turco
Rose-tinged, weighted clouds hang low. One seems to scuff
one towering, pointed roof–atop a bulging hill–
mounted with a windmill facing the Atlantic.
Ornamented by a rustling row of trees,
the massive mansion faces tumbling ocean surf,
far below. Surrounding grasses swirl with gold
and mauve–as does the ocean’s surface tinge, a seaman’s
warning of possible catastrophe, a demon’s
curse for sailors. Yet this Montauk home stands bold
against the threat of coastal squalls. It claims this turf
that’s borne the thrash of northeast gales and crashing seas.
Lounging in such a Montauk manse may seem romantic,
save for the windmill tower–its whirring blades may thrill
the Dutch. At every grinding turn, I’d cringe. “Enough!”
