Fractured Rainbow
by Lenora Rain-Lee Good

Quail hen
calls chicks
don’t go, don’t go.

Wren flutters
in the shrubs
seen only
when your eyes
are closed,
does she
tell her chicks,
stay, stay
or don’t go, don’t go?

Worm wriggles
for the deep
too slow, too late
chicks ate him
all gone.

Small dog
runs along
the porch
whines at the
inviting aromas
please, let me go.
Old cat hisses
her displeasure
at captivity.

Sun
barely risen
when the dew
is on the meadow–
rainbows
scattered on
the ground.
