Freedom Calls
by Howard Osborne

Pegged to a line, they flapped in the wind
But those bedsheets always yearned to fly
Aching to just be let loose, free in the air
To float high over fields, almost anywhere
Then finally escape, relishing the open sky
And with pillowcases, no longer twinned

Every few weeks, it’s the same old routine
Changed for others, washed in the stream
And wet or damp, given some time to dry
But if blown away they would say goodbye
Yet freedom always will remain the dream
And perhaps never again, to ever be seen
