Spring’s First Scents
by Michael Escoubas
(after Evening at Kintai Bridge in Spring, by Hasui Kawase, 1947)
It was as if
a still small voice
entered
the sanctuary
of my soul,
speaking low
as in a whisper–
placid water
a blue mirror–
cherry blossom scents
glide in light
evening air
like the boatman
oaring there–
and the colors:
blue tints,
lavenders and
golds and
virginal greens
mastered the night
giving voice
to the aura of spring
on this enchanted evening …
when a still small voice
spoke life to me
at Kintai Bridge in spring
