Squall Line
by Vaughn Neeld
On a stout line, sheets and towels billow full-bellied
as the wind shapes them into half-balloons
that strain against the tight grip of wooden pegs.
Across the blue-gray, wind-ruffled bay,
tree tops whip against a leaden sky.
The feeble sun, braving a lowering sky,
smears a dull-yellow sheen across the roof
of a nearby house–the moment the squall struck
captured in slashing strokes by a master’s brush.
