Jimmy's Song
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John

Momma said turn the radio on
They're playin' Jimmy's song
He finally made the top ten
Oh Lord he's tried so long

Jimmy played the guitar
Jimmy paid his dues
Jimmy traveled far and wide
And Jimmy sang the blues

We never thought he'd make it
But Momma said that ain't so
He left home at seventeen
It seems so long ago

Oh he could bring a tear to your eye
If only you'd listen awhile
And Jimmy knows that old guitar
Like he knows his mother's smile

Jimmy played the guitar
Jimmy paid his dues
Jimmy traveled far and wide
And Jimmy sang the blues

We always thought he'd come back home
We'd watch the road both night and day
Momma'd read us his letters
And every night she'd pray

Oh Lord I ain't askin' much
Just help my Jimmy along
Cause Lord you know he's a real good boy
And he sings a grand old song

Oh he could bring a tear to your eye
If only you'd listen awhile
And Jimmy knows that old guitar
Like he knows his mother's smile

Jimmy played the guitar
Jimmy paid his dues
Jimmy traveled far and wide
And Jimmy sang the blues

Oh he could bring a tear to your eye
If only you'd listen awhile
And Jimmy knows that old guitar
Like he knows his mother's smile

Well Momma kept the faith
And you know she wasn't wrong
It's good to see her standin' by the stove
Just a hummin' Jimmy's song

Peter Yarrow of the folk trio Peter, Paul,& Mary
and Darby Slick (Somebody to Love/Jefferson Airplane)
have both written music for this song
