Last Day of May
by Sharmagne Leland-St. John

Lacy lilacs by the lakeshore.
Gentle winds whisper through
Weeping willows.

White-capped waves lick the shoreline
While little Laura lingers,
Gathering mussel shells.

Mother says it's time to leave.
Wistfully Laura listens
To the squawking seabirds
Sand pails and shovels packed away,

They wend their way
Along the winding larkspur trail
Toward home
This last lazy day in May.
