Generations
by Vaughn Neeld

As the desert day winds down
and distant clouds blunt
the dazzling sun's harsh glare,

Adelina waits for her supper
of tamales and red and green chili
while her Abuelita scans her report card.

Abuelita knows how important
education is to those who dwell
in the desert.

So many dreams die of thirst
where the horizon is filled with
blue-brown mesas, sere sand,

and clouds full only of promise.
