Mother’s Blue Eyes
by Judy Lorenzen

“Where did you get your eyes so blue?
Out of the sky as I came through.”–George MacDonald

When she looked into our eyes,
we saw blue, sky blue,
true, iridescent tree swallow,
angels of the elms, blue,
gazing back at us.
Her piercing look of listening,
blue-green glittering in sunlight,
lifted our spirits,
and each word, a bird of wisdom
instructing us
to travel lightly in this world.
And the song,
the beautiful notes of her life,
like the songs these warblers
sing in flight or from branches,
so vital to their survival,
was our thriving.
Her eyes,
angelic blue,
always sang,
“I love you.”
