Day of Release

Red and white Ayrshires
one by one after milking
join the morning light
wait corral-safe
until eventual release
into the green lush pasture
on that eventful day
when dew was on the meadow
awaiting rough pink tongues
eager to lick the moisture
soon to glisten lips
at every mouthing
this early May
after the interminable days
of dry winter hay
and merciful fermented silage–
fodder for the seasonal prisoners–
until this carnival day
of dervish cows
reminding the aged farmer–
chewing on a whiskeyed corn nugget–
that his day of release
awaits.
