An Ode to Slow
by Michael Escoubas

Is it the sun rising so valiantly
above the cloud fluff
that brings this mother and daughter
so close to one’s heart?

It is as if they’re modelling
being together–
they blend in one with the other,
and their surroundings: desert colors

of gold, brown, and copper,
the mesas beneath the cloudbank–
a ruggedness that seems natural.
Their breakfast entrees wait until

together time is over–
there is no rush to eat and be done.
This is breakfast time in Taos,
time to sit and savor … slow.
