Suddenly
by Judy Lorenzen
First of May, on this single morning
past freeze warnings, the elms
out my front door–no rains, no winds–sun rising,
all in one accord, spark green.
Emerald, May’s birthstone, breaks out over the trees, that yesterday,
stood stark, empty armed.
What cue from last night’s moon or message from the stars?
What in those roots or the hearts of those trunks said it’s time–
it’s time for change, for waking, for giving birth–
orthodoxy or victory? and just wait
for the blossoming yet to come.
Amazing that the heavenly lights guide times–
like this beautiful season to celebrate mothers, the givers of life.
