Warm Assurances
by Gay Williford

When the dew was on the meadow
and the brown wren burst into song
in the potted plant hiding her nest–
Auntie Nola arose from her bed.
She stretched, said her morning prayers
and went to ready our breakfast.
Soon hot oatmeal with brown sugar
and raspberries was waiting before us.
Recently orphaned, my brother and I
had, thankfully been adopted by Nola.
As we settled in enjoying fresh muffins,
a warm glow emanated from the table
and the two of us felt the solidness
of her presence, the secure promise
of her care, and we relaxed into smiles
that had almost forgotten the path
of their curve.
