Always There at Beginning of Day
by Michael Escoubas

Day begins in quietude;
the world is calm.
Azure blues and chiffon whites
mixed with gray, say, “Yes,”
to the emerging sun. Light
begins to fill my soul,
as if planned as a gift from on high.

It is in such moments
that Mother comes to mind.
She said “Yes,” to life, and “Yes,”
to my life. “You have value;
you can do anything you put
your mind to, my son.” She
would say, “Shake off your

failures; lay them to one side.”
“You have better things to do
than feel bad about yesterday.”
I looked forward, in life, toward
the emerging sun, and think of her,
always there when day began …
and to this day, has never left.
