Bursting Bluebells
by Scott Shaffer

Sunlight streams through stark timber,
warming the floor of the quiet, river-bottom woods.

We smile as we meander the park trail
through colonies of bluebells–

wood fairies, exulting in spring’s advent.
Their sky-blue, bell-shaped blossoms

are nodding in the prairie breeze.
They “pop” out of their own vibrant green foliage,

with a rugged backdrop of oaks, elms, sycamores.
These azure beauties beguile us.

We delight in their dear presence;
breathe deeply of the fresh, backwoods air.

Winter’s weariness slips off our shoulders …
So, every spring, we plant these heralds of joy

in our woodland garden by our four-seasons back porch.
Their growing numbers join our spring chorus–

bleeding hearts, goat’s beard, Solomon’s seal, daffodils.
True, our soft-blue belles are short-lived.

But we’re forever charmed …
and already looking forward to next spring!
