A New Season
by Dean Pasch

Again and again, beginnings alert me
to endings, and vice versa. As shelves empty,
change fills the spaces left by departure.

The removal van is smiling and weeping,
a palimpsest of having arrived
somewhere full,  now departing full again.

Hopes shift gears, between love and its absence,
like a cloud filled sky, seeking a way
to do justice to weather.
My heart
is a bruised apple, a crisp new sheet
of a tree's answer to silence; I am
a pip and decay, a blossom hitting retina,
and the smell of a new season.
