Acorns
by Bruce Morton

Under the oak trees fat
Acorns drop, collect
Under the oak trees
Where squirrels convene.
Under the oak trees
They go nuts feeding.
In their frenzy, absconding,
Cheeky in their puffery,
Joyful in pilfering what
Is free for the taking.
Tight in their nests they
Cache their winter wealth.
Under the oak trees they
Chirp their good fortune.
