Knotted Blue Ivy and Choked Carrots
by Carole Mertz

Dear artist, we welcome you,
but your world is askew.

Fortunately geese still fly,
but they’ve turned red, and the bones

for tying up knotted blue ivy
are jagged and bled, and the penny moon

too low. Only the sun knows its
place, rising or falling, but
earth has lost her orientation.

Cabbages and blue carrots cannot grow
in such unearthly waves of habitation.

Help! call up the astronomers! Something’s
a-kilter–black demons drip toxic ink,

and all we can do is
tell it slant.
