The Squirrels are Stealing the Ammunition
by jacob erin-cilberto
Under the oak trees
acorns, like Japanese Zeroes
bombard us
as the wind laughs
at our bobbing and weaving
like soldiers on a battlefield
in WWII
we step on them
as if they were mines
they explode and crackle
leaving us testifying to fall
the leaves are turning
and then they will give one last salute
before making the jump
parachute optional
Under the oak trees
a war zone
and this war appears every year
no treaty can stop it,
but who wants to?
the wounded poets
need something to write about
and Nature provides
Under the oak trees.
