Storm at Sea: A Metaphor
by Vaughn Neeld

A quick, dark squall drips black
upon an aquamarine sea,
raising teepee heaves among
roiling, agitated whitecaps.

As the sun slips toward the horizon,
crepuscular rays scatter images
of sham suns through a jaundiced, marmalade
sky aflutter with carrot-colored gulls–

a lowering sun shining benevolently,
unbothered, unaware, beyond
bleeding black clouds and agitated waves–

a metaphor? or a warning?
