Thirsty Herd
by Gay Williford

A thirsty herd of Chopas
emerge from a background grape vineyard
to approach the turbulent sea ahead.
The sun vies for dominance with two moons
over churning waves – the sky,
streaked with brush-stroke clouds,
is witness to this strange, tilted scene.
The Chopas numerous spindly legs,
thin as rails and very extendable,
dribble out from their torsos as needed.
These fluid legs adapt to the ocean’s depths.
and absorb its brine –
saltwater being a staple in their unusual diet.
