As Thoughts Fly, by Deborah DeWit

Blackbird Fantasy
by Paulette Demers Turco

The sky is full of blackbirds
escaping from a pie
airing by a window–
no bird yelps a cry.

The flapping wings all whoosh,
no longer held within
the pages of the tome
below, where they have been.

Quietly, aware,
below the grated frame,
six purple pansies gleam–
the crows will gather fame.

No one will eat the pie.
The birds will all fly free
to wander every clime
for every child’s glee.

The magic news will spread
world-wide–finally,
food that’s fit for kings
will feed each family,

not solely for one day,
one meal, but evermore.
Will this bring peace or will
rulers still choose war?
