Alas Will I
by Joel Searby

My dearest love
alas, have I
broke the bonds
’twere meant to tie

our hearts together
for all of time,
our love to tether
through all the nights.

I tore and twisted,
shredded bare
the tend’rest flesh
without a care.

Left pieces shattered,
lives strewn ’round
like ashes scattered
on the ground.

Now sit we in
this broken state
unsure of how
or where the fates

will lead us now.
Through cloudy lands?
Dark scary forests?
Yet reaching hands

still find each other.
Clench it tight –
hold fast, my love –
’til all is right.

I will not let
our love go cold,
nor idly sit
just growing old.

My dearest love,
alas, will I,
keep loving you
until we die.
