“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes
The Faery Queene
by Sharmagne Leland-St.John
I was gathering truffles
in a misty autumn glen
Where we as children used to go
when
The Faery Queene
spoke to me.
she asked me to invoke a childhood memory
as if she had cast a spell,
I recalled a forest where we used to dwell.
in this summer place
spiders wove their webs of Belgian lace,
frogs croaked,
night birds called,
and crickets led the symphony.
when summer faded into fall
leaves became a ruffled,
rainbow shawl
draped on every tree,
soon to be replaced by a pall of winter snow...
in this place where we as children used to go
