“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes

For Tom Hennen, Poet of Landscape
by Marel Aime Duclos

White golden light
Burns a hole
Into the day

Invisible flame
Speaks no ashes
On the ground

Distant trees
Stand immobile
Voiceless

No bird, no ground creature
Dare approach
Fear the blinding

Unseen in the foreground
Fragile human
Kneels awestruck

Light and leaf
Hold hands
Sigh in silence
